This is brilliant for lots of reasons. Harrods Cookery Book by Marilyn Aslani. It is everything
you would expect from the world’s most famous shop. The incomparable food halls with
spectacular displays are always a joy to visit, and we do often visit as our son, Oscar, works
there. It is a very good cookery book with all the bases covered. Of course it is rather fancy,
with some wonderful dishes like pears poached with quince and cassis, or salad roquefort
and what about quenelles of halibut with saffron sauce. It is all so 1980’s, and I remember
cooking dishes like this back then, not too much has changed as I flick through the book.
There is a lot of game, with teal, widgeon and pigeons, which we don’t eat enough of. Great
to see grouse with bread sauce included, a real favourite of mine.
I wonder what the prices were back then for say a lemon sole from the fish counter. Fish
prices have gone through the roof. A lemon sole just now would cost you about £11 to buy
from a wholesale fishmonger, quite expensive. But this is a great, fun and fascinating book to flick through, which will be used again after I find a few nice dishes to try.
