This week I have chosen a vegetarian cookbook from the shelf. ‘Easy Wins’ by Anna Jones is a great book if meat or fish is not for you. There are plenty of dishes to inspire you—whether you do meat-free Mondays or are full-blown veggie. There are many tips and ways to make things delicious without the use of meat or fish; and creative ways to use spices and ingredients like lemons, tahini and peanuts for flavour, which is always a tad tricky when cooking vegetable dishes.
This is a clever book that is easy to navigate, with mouthwatering ideas—some classics and some new. I am very fond of the way the ingredients are mapped out as chapters, with mustard being my favourite. Life without mustard must be awful.
There are too many dishes to pick favourites, but the information on how to use certain spices to create flavour is brilliant. I also admire the way she helps the reader to cook flexibly: what to use up, how to avoid waste, when to season, and how to layer flavour. It is a very clever book indeed—a real go-to for us normal folk who just want to eat tasty food.
